Rhuthun 13 Yr Wyddgrug 33

Ruthin had to wait to hear the result of the game between Colwyn Bay and COBRA to know if they had avoided being in the bottom two after a disappointing display against Mold at home.   The Blues started with some urgency and were 3 points up after 2 minutes with a penalty goal from Nathan Jones.  Play was oscillating from end to end as both sides tried to gain ascendancy.  The Blues missed a chance to put another 3 points on the board when a penalty attempt went wide.  Ruthin had to defend well to counter a vigorous Mold attack but eventually the pressure told and the visitors went ahead with an unconverted try after 25 minutes.  Within 5 minutes the Blues were back in the lead with another penalty goal.  Just on half time Mold had a scrum on the half way line and after some poor Blues tackling the visitors grabbed another try and the whistle blew with Mold 10-6 ahead.  The game appeared to evenly matched at the break but continued errors from the Blues meant that they were on the back foot for most of the second half against a fast moving Mold attack.  In the first 20 minutes of the second half Mold got another 3 unconverted tries and a penalty goal putting them 28-6 up.  The Blues tried to reduce the arrears but despite winning a series of scrums and penalties within a few yards of the visitors’ line were unable to crack a solid Mold defence.  In the 60th minute the ball was chipped over the try line for an attempted  Ruthin touch down in the corner but the ball was judged not to have been touched down and still in play and was picked up by a Mold back who ran the length of the pitch to score the visitors’ 6th try.  Again the Blues went on the attack and in the 78th minute 2nd row Sion Roberts forced his way over the line for a converted try.  The whistle blew with Mold deserved winners and the score 33-13.   Mold’s try scorers were Scott Ferguson (2), Cai Edwards, Aran Jones, Ryan Kirby and Aled Ellis with Tom Davies kicking their penalty goal.  This has been the most difficult season for the Blues for a long time but the relegation pressure is now off and they can look forward to travelling to Caernarfon for the Conwy Land Rover North Wales Plate semi final on 29th April.
