Bethesda 15 Rhuthun 21

Despite giving away two soft tries in the first half Ruthin fought their way back to win this exciting encounter at Bethesda.  Playing conditions were difficult because of a soft pitch and intermittent rain.  The Blues were first on the scoreboard with a penalty goal from centre Nathan Jones after 5 minutes but Ruthin had to defend well against the subsequent Bethesda’s attack and after 20 minutes the home side evened up the score with a penalty goal from Gethin Long.  Within minutes Bethesda were 7 points ahead when Gethin Owen intercepted a Ruthin pass and sped over the line with Long converting.  The Blues tried to reduce the arrears but couldn’t get past a solid Pesda defence.  Just before half time play returned to Ruthin’s half and Bethesda’s Alwyn Roberts picked up the ball after a fumbled Ruthin pass in their own 22 and scored.  With the home side 15-3 up at half time an inspirational talk by the coaches to the Ruthin team spurred them on to attack from the start of the second half.   Bethesda again defended well and although most the first 20 minutes of play were spent in Pesda’s 22 it looked as though it was all to no avail when the home side cleared their lines to Ruthin’s 10 yard line.  Ruthin’s pack scrummaged well throughout the match and after a good scrum wing Huw Parry was released down field in a move which led to fullback Mike Evans scoring with Nathan converting.  At 15-10 to Bethesda the Blues could see a win in sight and continued on the attack.  With 10 minutes to go Nathan bagged another penalty goal and then after another good run by Evans Ruthin were awarded a scrum on Bethesda’s 5 yard line and fly half Iestyn Davies nipped over for a try in the corner putting the Blues 18-15 up.  A tense last few minutes ensued but with Ruthin still on the attack pressure was released when Pesda conceded another penalty which Nathan kicked and the game played out with the Blues winning 21-15.  This was another good performance under pressure and Ruthin will be looking forward to 2nd placed Pwllheli’s visit next Saturday.
