We took 2 teams to the Mold Festival of Rugby today and both showed some great skills, commitment and tackling ability. The Dragons were playing in their first ever tournament and despite suffering a number of defeats there was clear improvement from each game to the next.
Time together as a team saw them move from bunching up to spreading out in defence and missing tackles to making tackles by the end of the fourth game. A great improvement overall. There are some great players in the making in the Dragons team!! Well done to Thomas, Gwion, Tomos, Cai, Will O and Josh in their first tournament and for some great forward runs and first tackles.
The Wolves proved to be a very strong team, able to draw on their experience. Victories over Nant Conwy 8-1, Whitchurch 3-0, Mold 3-1 and Colwyn Bay 4-1 put them through to the semi-final against Nant Conwy A team. The semi-final was a very tight game with really strong tackles from both sides and Nant Conwy beat us in the ruck most of the time stealing quite a lot of ball from us but some really good strong running and focus on passing wide helped up break through their line and helped us score the only try of the game putting us through to the final against Wrexham.
The final against Wrexham’s strongest team was again very close fought with a little bit of indiscipline from our team, giving Wrexham more ball than they deserved. The Wolves played with a strong defensive line, supported each other well both in the tackle and going forwards and made some really good runs with great offloads enabling us to keep the ball in Wrexham’s half for most of the game. On the one occasion that Wrexham threatened our try line, they were able to send their biggest player through the middle to sneak the only try of the game.
All coaches, parents, supporters and of course our team manager Ali are wonderfully proud of such a great bunch of kids who truly worked their socks off today.
Thanks to Julie, Sarah and Laura for their extra help today.
