Rhuthun 17 Bro Ffestiniog 12

Ruthin got back to winning ways on Saturday at Cae Ddol in a hard fought match against Bro Ffestiniog where the result was in the balance right into injury time.  On a heavy pitch after a night’s rain the Blues started brightly with two tries from wing Josh Wilson in the first 15 minutes.  The visitors responded and after a period of dogged attack forcing mistakes from Ruthin fly half Huw James ran through the home defence for a try which he converted.  With 15 minutes to go and 3 points between the teams both sides tried to get the ascendancy but with a slippery ball and the heavy conditions there was no further score and at half time the score was 10-7 to Ruthin.  The second half started with a shower of rain making the conditions even more difficult.  For a period Ruthin were camped on the visitors’ try line but sterling defence from Bro kept them out and the play switched to the Blues 22 and Ruthin had to similarly defend hard to prevent a score. Eventually the play swung again to Bro’s half and after a fracas near Bro’s 10 yard line both sides went down to 14 men. With about 10 minutes play to go Wilson broke out of defence and sped upfield offloading to centre Emyr Gwynedd for a try between the posts converted by fly half Nathan Jones.  The Blues relief at having a 10 point advantage lasted only a few minutes however as the visitors returned to the attack and after testing the Ruthin defence again, prop Dylan Jones went over for an unconverted try.  The last few minutes were an anxious time for Ruthin supporters as Bro once again piled on the pressure but eventually the ball returned to Ruthin’s hands and was kicked into touch for a 17-12 win with Bro getting a deserved losers bonus point.
