Rhuthun 24 COBRA 18

COBRA were first with points on the board with a penalty goal from Harry Jukes after 10 minutes in this hard fought match.  Ruthin were having plenty of the play but could not get past a solid COBRA defence and a 20-minute downpour resulting in a lot of surface water on the pitch did not make the Blues task any easier.  Despite the conditions both sides continued to play as open rugby as they could and it was the visitors who went further ahead after No 8 Jack Jukes avoided 3 tackles to get over the line a few minutes before half time.  Harry Jukes added a further three points from another penalty goal just on half time and the visitors went in 11-0 ahead.  The second half was a very different affair as the Blues began to claw back the score.  First over the line was centre Steffan Morgan who charged over from the 22 line and then after pressure in the visitors half centre Emyr Gwynedd was put through in the corner with replacement Shay Owen converting.  The Blues continued to dominate and in the following 20 minutes Morgan got two further tries with Owen converting one.  COBRA were not finished however and in the dying minutes of the match prop Nico Williams went over the for the visitors’ second try with Harry Jukes converting.  The whistle went with the final score 24-18 to Ruthin and both sides getting bonus points.  After the match the pitch looked more like the lake at Cae Ddol than a rugby field and it was a credit to both sides to have provided such an entertaining match in such conditions.  After the match Kyle Davies and Jason Humphreys were presented with ties marking their 200 and 100 appearances for the 1st team respectively.  Ruthin 2nds also had a good day winning at Abergele 53-3.
