COBRA 17 Rhuthun 18

Ruthin won their final pre-season game at COBRA on Saturday but had to wait until the 74th minute to secure the game.  Travelling with just 17 players and some playing out of position this was always going to be a hard game against competitive opposition.  First points went to the Blues with a penalty goal from the boot of fly half Dafydd Lloyd after 10 minutes.  Both sides were finding it difficult to string a period of good play together but gradually the home side swung into gear and despite some desperate defence by Ruthin COBRA grabbed their first try after 20 minutes play.  The match continued to be scrappy and although Lloyd put Ruthin ahead with a second penalty goal and full back Steffan Parry almost went over for a try it was the home side that went in for the break 12-6 ahead with a converted try on 40 minutes.  Immediately after the break COBRA bagged another try and the game moved to uncontested scrums after an injury to prop Ryan Roberts.  Play for the 20 minutes was almost all in the Blues half with Ruthin having to defend well against a vigorous COBRA attack. But on 60 minutes the Blues attack began function and after some of the best phase play of the game hooker Danny Miller nipped over for a try between the posts and Lloyd converted.  COBRA responded but the Blues playing with more confidence withstood the pressure and went on the offensive and were rewarded with a fine try by Jayden Darvill putting them 18-17 ahead.  The last 6 minutes were played out with the Blues still probing the COBRA defence but with no further score.
