Rhuthun and Bala battled a scoreless first half in an enthralling match at Maes Gwyniad. The visitors started well spending much of the first quarter in the home side’s 22 but Bala’s workmanlike defence frustrated any attempt to get over the try line. After withstanding the Blues pressure Bala went on the attack and Rhuthun had to similarly defend well to prevent a score. Play returned to Bala’s half just before half time but again to no avail and the whistle blew with no score. Immediately after the break wing Josh Wilson sped over the Bala try line for the Blues first try but within minutes Bala responded with a try from Owain Puw. Again the Blues went on the attack and after some great backs play Josh got his second try. Bala’s strong pack was beginning to assert it’s ascendancy and after Rhuthun went down to 14 men with a yellow card Bala’s forwards drove over the visitors’ line with a try from No8 Dochan Roberts converted by Owain Aled. With about 15 minutes left and the score 12-10 to Bala the home side kept up the pressure and drove over again with an unconverted try by prop Dave Yates. For the last 8 minutes or so the Blues returned to Bala’s 22 but were unable to capitalise on territory and the whistle blew with no further score and Bala winning 17-10.
