Llangefni and Rhuthun fought out a tough encounter at Cae Smyrna on Saturday with the winner in doubt until the final minutes. The home side put Rhuthun under pressure from kick off and only strong defence, a feature of Rhuthun’s game throughout the match, kept them at bay. After clearing their lines the Blues went on the attack and after some excellent scrummaging in Cefni’s 22, 2nd row Deian Lloyd Williams nipped over the line for a try converted by full back Dyfan Humphreys. Cefni returned to the attack immediately and reduced the arrears with a penalty goal from Rhys Hughes. Cefni continued to test the visitors’ defence, offloading and moving the ball about the park with accuracy and after 30 minutes play were awarded another kickable penalty goal attempt and Hughes obliged putting the score at 7-6 to the Blues. From the restart Rhuthun made the most of a line out just in Cefni’s half and centre Mike Jones forced his way through the Cefni defence releasing Humphreys to run over the whitewash for a try which he converted. The last 8 minutes or so of the first half were scoreless and the whistle blew with Rhuthun ahead 14-6. Immediately after the break Cefni returned to the attack and Hughes reduced the arrears again with a penalty goal 5 minutes in. Rhuthun tried to widen the gap again but Cefni’s defence held and the middle of the 2nd half was a defensive tussle with Cefni having much of the possession and territory. Towards the end of the last quarter the Blues began to mount a more concerted attack and, after some great scrummaging in Cefni’s 22, scrum half Cai Edwards nipped over for a try converted by Humphreys. The last few minutes were spent in midfield as Cefni tried to launch another attack but to no avail and the game ended with Rhuthun winning 21-9.
