Ruthin Youth 25 Mold Youth 5

On a bright sunny afternoon at Cae Ddol, Ruthin Youth hosted Mold in the 1st Round of the Welsh Youth Cup. From the outset of the match, Ruthin's forwards were dominant and from an impressive drive they were rewarded early on when captain Ollie Powell-Jones powered over from short range to score the opening try in the left hand corner. The swirling wind made the conditions difficult for kicking and Nathan Jones was unsuccessful with his conversion.

Ruthin's forward dominance continued (with props Owain Jones and Dan Owen, hooker Harris Waseem, Ben Godfrey and the back row of Will Jones, Brynach Edwards and Dafydd Marshman at the fore) as another driving maul laid the platform for the inspirational Ollie Powell-Jones to peel around the blind side to score his second try in the right hand corner to increase the lead to 10-0.

Even though Ruthin were in the ascendancy, they were regularly being penalised by the referee. No.8 Dafydd Marshman was having a superb debut until he was harshly adjudged to be impeding Mold at a ruck and was yellow carded. This enabled Mold to get back into the game with an unconverted try from a driving maul of their own after they'd got away with having an eight man scrum against Ruthin's seven man pack.

Within barely a minute of Dafydd Marshman's return to the field, he took a fine two handed catch at a lineout on Mold's 22 which gave Ruthin's backs the time and space to fire the ball along the line for left winger Ben Green to race over for an unconverted try on the stroke of half time. Ruthin 15 Mold 5.

The second period continued with Ruthin's superiority being rewarded by Ollie Powell-Jones completing his hat trick in the left hand corner following a searing run from Inside his own half by Ben Green which was only halted by a last gasp tackle under the posts. Ruthin 20 Mold 5.

Midway through the second half, a loose kick from Mold was collected by right winger Ciron Davies who released the ball to outside half Iestyn Davies, whose clever deft pass found full back Dyfan Humphreys and he fed centre Dafydd Cale who timed a perfect pass to his centre partner Nathan Jones to canter to the try line from 40 metres out. Jones missed the conversion so the score remained at Ruthin 25 Mold 5 at the final whistle for the hosts to progress to the next round of this national competition.

There were good performances from both scrum halves Charlie Turner and Finn Nelson who shared a half each. Ruthin also gave decent run outs in the second half to Ifan Davies, Iestyn Laing, William Owen, Elis Jones and debutant Sam Davies who all performed admirably.
