Ruthin struggled to contain a vigorous Nant side in this Division 1 North game at Cae Ddol on Saturday. First points went to Nant after 10 minutes with a drop goal from fly half Arthur Lennon. The Blues went down to 14 men with a yellow card and the visitors took immediate advantage with 2 tries in quick succession, a pushover from a lineout by 2nd row Iolo Evans, converted by centre Delwyn Jones, and a well worked effort by Lennon. Nant continued to probe Ruthin’s defence and after a further ten minutes wing Gwion Ellis Jones ran through the Blues tacklers and scored with Jones converting. For the last 15 minutes of the first half Ruthin contained the visitor’s attack and at half time the score was 22-0 to Nant. Ruthin tried to build some attacks at the beginning of the second half without making much headway and often handing possession to the visitors unnecessarily. After 47 minutes Nant’s backs broke from their own half and after some good phase play scrum half Cai Jones went over for the visitor’s bonus point try. Again the Blues tried to respond but to no avail and Nant turned up the pressure with 4 further tries in 15 minutes from Ellis Jones, Delwyn Jones, prop Robin Glyn and Lennon all converted by Jones. In the last 5 minutes the Blues finally put some concerted attacks together and after some good forwards play prop Jason Humphreys forced himself over the whitewash with an unconverted try. That was the last score of the match which finished with Nant winning 55-5. The Blues will have to pick themselves up quickly for their Land Rover North Wales Cup match at home to COBRA on Thursday 17th November KO 7:30pm.
