Dolgellau and Rhuthun served up another cracking contest, with both sides searching for a much needed league win and in doing so, scoring three tries apiece.
Dolgellau got off to a good start, scoring after only 4 minutes, as wing Dylan Evans, broke free to sprint home down the left touchline and under the posts. Skipper, Gerwyn Thomas converted to put his side 7-0 ahead. Dolgellau dominated the opening quarter, but could not add to the score, and after a period of home side pressure Blues full back Mike Evans broke from his own half and sprinted upfield to score in the corner. Less than 4 minutes later, Rhuthun forwards enjoyed several phases of play leading to no.8, Chris Davies going over. Second row, Deian Lloyd Williams converted.
Dolgellau Stand-off Thomas reduced the deficit to two points with a penalty on the half hour mark, and the half ended at 12-10 to Rhuthun after they missed chances to go further ahead.
The second half also started well for Dolgellau, as after only three minutes, full back, John Harrison scored a try making the score 15-12 to the home side. For a while it looked as though Dolgellau might go further ahead but Rhuthun’s defence held and they drew level at 15-15 after twelve minutes with a penalty by Lloyd Williams.
Going into the last quarter, Dolgellau regained the lead, when prop Huw Emyr Jones squeezed over for the try with Thomas converting. Again the Blues had to defend well to prevent the home side going further ahead and after weathering pressure in which Doglellau almost scored Rhuthun’s pack drove over the Dolgellau line with Lloyd Williams converting his own try. With the score at 22-22 and seven minutes to go both sides unsuccessfully tried to add to the score and the whistle blew for full time. This was a welcome 2 points for Ruthin at a ground where they have struggled to gain any points in recent seasons and they’ll go into the North Wales Cup game at COBRA with confidence on Friday night. Ruthin 2nds also won their second match in a week beating Mold 32-17.
